MOSCOW, 9 December (BelTA) - The Union State forum on ways of protecting and preserving historical memory will be held in Brest in 2026, Speaker of Russia's State Duma, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Vyacheslav Volodin told the media following the session of the Parliamentary Assembly in Moscow on 9 December, BelTA has learned.
“Our Belarusian colleagues have proposed holding the forum on protecting and preserving historical memory next year in Brest. We have accepted this invitation and, for our part, will strive to ensure that this involves not just statements, discussions, and resolutions. It is important that we do everything possible to restore justice regarding the memory of those who are no longer with us,” Vyacheslav Volodin said.
The forum in Brest will be a continuation of the Union State's international forum “Great Heritage, Shared Future” held in Volgograd in the spring of 2025 with the participation of the presidents of Belarus and Russia, Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin. “One of the priorities for the Parliamentary Assembly is the preservation and protection of historical memory, the memory of those who are no longer with us,” Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized.
“Yet, we see how unjust the world is today toward the defenders and those who sacrificed themselves for Europe, for instance, to be free of fascism,” Vyacheslav Volodin said. “But 3,500 of our memorials, the graves of soldiers and officers who gave their lives for freedom, have been dismantled and destroyed in European countries. Therefore, we cannot remain indifferent. We believe that the time will come (and we must hasten it) for these graves and monuments to be restored. This is not merely important to us; we must not rest while such things are happening in a number of countries, such as Poland, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine."
“I would like other countries that have turned a blind eye to this and that believe nothing of the sort is happening to finally wake up and realize that by behaving this way, they are paving the road for neo-Nazism. All this could lead to severe consequences," Vyacheslav Volodin emphasized.
“All of humanity, all the sound forces of the world must finally realize that this is unacceptable toward those who died defending the world from fascism. And the countries that were part of the anti-Hitler coalition such as the United States, the UK, and France must understand that they need to voice their position on this issue and take a stand on principle," the speaker of the Russian State Duma added.
