Vitebsk paratrooper brigade on alert as part of Belarusian army’s snap inspection

VITEBSK, 10 February (BelTA) – The 103rd Vitebsk Airborne Brigade has joined the ongoing combat readiness inspection of the Belarusian army, BelTA has learned.

As part of the unscheduled test of the combat readiness of Belarus’ Armed Forces the Vitebsk-based army unit has been assigned a number of tasks. Vladimir Safonov, commanding officer of the 103rd Vitebsk Airborne Brigade, told reporters: “Today we have been subjected to a snap inspection as part of our head of state’s plan. For the first time we’ve received a tactical instruction personally signed by our president and commander-in-chief. Based on that the brigade’s units and elements have started carrying out their assigned tasks. Constant readiness units will have to march to mission areas, deploy in concentration areas, and set up defenses in specified areas. Later on we will finish this inspection by completing shooting tests and physical fitness tests.”
The readiness of the airborne brigade’s modern combat hardware and the personnel has been tested at the army unit’s permanent station.
BelTA reported earlier that the large-scale inspection of the Armed Forces authorized by the head of state began on 16 January. The commander-in-chief closely follows its progress. A new system has been worked out to enable the president to place military units on combat alert without involving the Defense Ministry and the General Staff. The primary goal of this inspection is to see an objective picture. This is why the events are sudden.
