Brest Fortress defense recreated on 22 June

BREST, 22 June (BelTA) – The military and historical reenactment “22 June. Brest Fortress” dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War was held in the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex on 22 June.

The reenactment started at 5.00a.m. immediately after a commemorative meeting. The site of the reenactment was the Kobrin fortification. The seriously wounded Major Gavrilov engaged in his last battle against the enemy in its caponier on the 32nd day of the war. The moment the hero was taken captive is traditionally part of the reenactment.

The viewers saw the attack under the command of Samvel Matevosyan, the defense of the 9th frontier post under the command of Andrei Kizhevatov, the episodes of the battles on the border, capture of children and wives of officers. In addition to the key events of the defense of the fortress, the reenactment also featured new episodes: fight of Private First Class Vasily Volokitin, an episode with the human shield, the detention of defectors. The reenactment lasted about 50 minutes.

The reenactment featured more than 500 history buffs and also pyrotechnics, an artillery gun, horse border patrols, an armored car, motorcycles, passenger and freight cars. All in all, the 8th edition of the international military and historical meeting “22 June. Brest Fortress” brought together nearly 1,500 re-enactors from 11 countries: Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Austria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Japan and China.

The reenactment festival has been organized by the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, the Brest City Hall, the Brest Oblast Youth Center, the reenactment club Garnizon, the BRSM Youth Union, and the military commissariats of Brest Oblast and the city of Brest.
