MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) – The fifth Rosatom scientific and educational expedition Icebreaker of Knowledge has reached the North Pole on the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Years of Victory (50 Let Pobedy). This year, for the first time the expedition has brought together international participants, including from Belarus, BelTA has learned from Rosatom's country office in Belarus.
The expedition participants took their national flags to the top of the planet. Immediately after landing on the ice, Ruslan Sasov, captain of the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy, addressed the participants with the most northern lecture organized by Rosatom together with the Russian Knowledge Society. Next, the international arctic expedition is heading to the Franz Josef Land archipelago.
The first team of the arctic expedition consists of 63 talented students, including 10 participants from countries where Rosatom develops nuclear technologies (Belarus, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Hungary, India, China, South Africa). Fifteen experts, selected during the World Youth Festival, which was held in Sirius federal territory in 2024, are also on the team exploring the North Pole. Among them are representatives of Belarus, Cameroon, Iraq, Bangladesh, Tunisia, Uzbekistan and others. Four Belarusians have made part of the team: Anton Shibitsky, a student of Minsk school No. 148, and young scientists of three institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Anna Doroshenko, Maria Kudrevich, and Yuri Rusak.
First documentary TV show about the life of the international team of students, participants of the expedition, in difficult arctic conditions will be filmed on the icebreaker.
Rosatom's arctic expedition Icebreaker of Knowledge is timed to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the nuclear icebreaker fleet, with the Russian Knowledge Society serving as a partner. The science and education project is organized by the network of Atomic Energy Information Centers (AEIC) and Rosatom State Corporation. It is aimed at popularization of natural science disciplines and technologies in the nuclear industry, search for and support of talented and gifted children, development of their abilities, and career guidance.
