Belarusian State University's 100th anniversary described as historical event for Belarus

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – The 100th anniversary since the foundation of the Belarusian State University (BSU) is a historical event not only for the university but the country, too. Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova made the relevant statement during a solemn session of the BSU Council, BelTA has learned.

The senator said: “Not everyone is destined to celebrate such an anniversary but today we participate in this historical event in the life of not only the university but our country. Because the BSU is not simply the largest scientific and educational center of the economy. You march together with our country. The magnificent history the university has and the glorious traditions, which you continue today and which were once started by those overseeing the establishment of the university, have allowed doing everything for the university to be established and be recognized all over the world.”

The head of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament noted it is difficult to secure such accomplishments. “Today I would like to thank you and offer words of genuine gratitude for the work on training specialists for all branches of our economy, on educating patriots of our country. There is not a single enterprise or organization in Belarus where your graduates do not work. About 185,000 specialists have been trained for various branches of the Belarusian economy. A big thank you for that. I'd like to sincerely wish you the very kindest, certainly further development, evolution, prosperity, the very best and good health to every one of you,” she stressed.

Natalya Kochanova added that the Belarusian State University is actively involved in accomplishing the tasks of importance for the country. “Today BSU experts and scientists work with us to develop legislation. All of us together are now working on the Constitution. I've already seen approaches to preventing the spread of the COVID infection. Those are the challenges life gives us while you forge ahead together with the country,” she stated. “We understand it is not easy, that it involves a lot of work. And you know how reverently the president treats pedagogues, students, and the work university professors do. A meeting with students took place in this hall not so long ago. Today I have the great honor of reading out aloud the president's greetings on the occasion of the 100th anniversary.”

Natalya Kochanova also presented state awards to BSU personnel.

The Belarusian State University will turn 100 on 30 October. This event has been added to the list of anniversaries, with which celebration UNESCO is associated. It makes the BSU's 100th anniversary an international event and confirms the significant contribution of the Belarusian university to the development of world education and science.

Over the course of 100 years the Belarusian State University has trained over 185,000 specialists, 4,700 candidates and 700 doctors of sciences, over 15,000 foreign specialists, master's degree and PhD students. The graduates include prominent scientists, academicians, professors, laureates of government awards of the USSR, BSSR, and Belarus, top managers of large companies. People's poets, honored workers, winners of Olympic Games are also among the graduates.
