Belarusian Information Ministry concerned about several tut.by publications

MINSK, 19 January (BelTA) – The Information Ministry is looking into a number of publications on the website tut.by in order to evaluate their compliance with the legislation, BelTA learned from Belarusian Information Minister Igor Lutsky on 19 January.

The official said that the Information Ministry issued four warnings to the online mass medium tut.by in 2020. In line with the mass media law the information Ministry filed a lawsuit to terminate the operation of the website as an online mass medium. The Supreme Court confirmed the legality and the justification of the ministry's warnings. On 3 December 2020 the Economic Court of Minsk ruled in favor of terminating the operation of the online mass medium. On 19 January 2021 the court of appeal upheld that ruling. All the actions the Information Ministry has undertaken, all the legal recourse steps have ended with the ruling that absolutely satisfies the Belarusian Information Ministry, Igor Lutsky said.

The decision of the court of appeal comes into force as of the moment it is passed but can be challenged under the cassation procedure within one month.

The official noted that the Information Ministry is now looking into a number of publications on the website tut.by in order to verify their compliance with Article 38 of the Mass Media Law (information, which Internet resources must not distribute). The Information Ministry intends to make sure the website publishes no incorrect information that can damage public and state interests. Igor Lutsky stressed: “At present the Information Ministry continues monitoring Belarus' information space. If the mass media law or other Belarusian laws are violated, we will immediately issue either warnings or demands to remove incorrect information. Or decisions will be made to suspend operation or stop the spread of such information by blocking it.”
