Belarus weather service, WB to finalize roadmap on early warning systems

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – The National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring (Belhydromet) of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry and the World Bank agreed to finalize the draft roadmap to improve Belhydromet and the early warning systems in Belarus, BelTA learned from Belhydromet.

The parties will be working on the draft roadmap through March 2020. the signing ceremony has been scheduled at the World Bank Office in Minsk in April 2020.

The bank developed the roadmap to implement the project “Enhancing disaster preparedness in the Republic of Belarus”. The document is a potential tool to enhance the national hydro-meteorological service and early warning systems, wildfire forecasting and also radiation control and weather forecast systems. The draft roadmap is based on the assessment of the needs and potential of Belhydromet which is the only official supplier of services in weather forecasting, water resources, radiation monitoring and warnings.

The technical assistance project “Enhancing disaster preparedness in the Republic of Belarus” is aimed at strengthening the potential through improving services in public awareness of extreme weather conditions, risk identification, data presence and distribution and the national strategy to reduce the risk of catastrophes. The project is implemented jointly with the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry and the Emergencies Ministry.
