Belarus to chair CIS Human Rights Commission

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Belarus will chair the CIS Human Rights Commission, head of the commission Tatyana Moskalkova told journalists, BelTA reports.

“The chairmanship in the commission will be transferred from the Russian Federation to the Republic of Belarus,” said Tatyana Moskalkova, Chairperson of the CIS Human Rights Commission and Russian Human Rights Commissioner. “Two colleagues from the Republic of Belarus are on the commission. They are Yevgenia Paramonova and Irina Kostevich. We work very closely with them on a wide range of issues.”

The fifth meeting of the CIS Human Rights Commission is taking place in Minsk. Tatyana Moskalkova noted that the meeting will consider thematic reports on protecting youth rights and protecting the right to a healthy environment. “It is crucial that people have access to information about the real environmental situation. It is also important that we create a common space where young people can find a job, get an education, and feel comfortable in the migration field, so they can realize their potential. There are still many problems related to mobility, student dormitories, and tuition fees. We propose to the government, after conducting a monitoring in this common space, that legislative amendments be made to ensure young people feel comfortable,” she said.

CIS First Deputy Secretary-General Igor Petrishenko emphasized that the organization has paid close attention to youth issues since its formation. Cooperation in this area was formalized in 2005 with the signing of a corresponding agreement, and a number of other documents have since been adopted. Initiatives to support young scientists and inventors are being implemented across the CIS. “At the initiative of the Belarusian side, the 3rd CIS and EAEU Youth Forum was held in Minsk this year. This is a platform that allows young people to share best practices regarding the support for youth initiatives and their practical implementation. After all, it’s no secret that we must pass on to young people all the integration developments that have been adopted in all areas of our lives,” said Igor Petrishenko.
He added that the topic of a favorable environment is also important. “Our livelihoods depend on the environment. We must protect nature, preserve its diversity, and ensure a balance between sustainable economic growth and the creation of a favorable environment,” emphasized the CIS First Deputy Secretary-General. Cybersecurity issues will also be discussed at the meeting.
