Belarus' peace-loving policy emphasized

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) – Belarus pursues a consistent peace-loving policy, the policy of a safe and reliable neighbor, the policy of a mediator willing to help resolve disputes. Belarusian Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky made the relevant statement during the regional seminar on implementing international humanitarian law in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “For Belarus as a country that has seen multiple wars, including the most bloodthirsty one in mankind's history – World War Two – overcoming consequences of the war is still of current interest.”

The 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions is marked this year. The conventions represent the key tool for ensuring humane treatment on battlefields and for protecting victims of armed conflicts. The anniversary offers an opportunity to evaluate how norms of the international humanitarian law live up to today's reality, an opportunity to determine areas that need to be addressed through joint decisions.

In turn, Head of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Belarus Djordje Drndarski spoke highly of the degree and results of the committee's interaction with the Belarusian Justice Ministry, of the reliability and strategic content of joint actions in the sphere of international humanitarian law.

The regional seminar on implementing international humanitarian law is scheduled for 29-31 October. Participants of the seminar are expected to discuss urgent challenges in the sphere of humanitarian activities, the restoration of family ties, the preservation of cultural values in the period of an armed conflict, the protection of personal data as a tool to protect the rights of the individual. Taking part in the seminar are representatives of the ministries of justice, foreign affairs, defense, culture, and healthcare from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine, experts of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, representatives of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and the Secretariat of the CIS Defense Ministers Council, representatives of the academic community.
