MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) - A ceremony to honor the winners of the 8th National Theatrical Art Contest “National Theater Award” took place on the stage of the Kupala Theater in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Culture Minister Ruslan Chernetsky noted that the National Theater Award is a celebration for the entire theater community. "This award honors the best of the best. The quality of the productions continues to rise with each edition of the contest. Each award ceremony is marked by interesting discoveries in various categories, not only in drama theater but also in musical theater and also children's and puppet theater, which is particularly pleasing to me personally,” the minister added.
“The national biennial award is gaining increasing significance not only for theater professionals and the theater community but also for audiences. We see that many people, particularly ordinary viewers, eagerly await this ceremony. In 2023, after the previous theater awards, I received a huge number of congratulations from regular audience members,” Ruslan Chernetsky said.

The production “Faust. A Deal with the Devil” by the Maksim Gorky National Academic Drama Theater based on Goethe's tragedy was recognized winner in the Best Drama Theater Production for the Main Stage category. “Towers of the Molodechno Castle” by the Minsk Regional Drama Theater was named winner in the Best Drama Theater Production for Small Stage category. The play “Smart Little Dog Sonya” by the Belarusian State Puppet Theater was recognized best in the Best Production for Children and Youth category. “Bang-Bang-Bang” by the Mogilev Regional Puppet Theater was victorious in the Best Puppet Theater Production category. The Best Opera Production and Best Ballet Production awards went to the opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the Cinderella ballet by the Bolshoi Theater of Belarus. The operetta “The Beautiful Elena” by the Belarusian State Academic Musical Theater won the Best Production in the Genre of Operetta, Musical Comedy, or Musical category.

The special award for services to Belarusian theatrical art was presented to Boris Gerlovan, the art director of the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater.
The contest was organized with the support of the Culture Ministry and the Minsk city administration. The jury and audiences evaluated 37 productions from 27 theater groups from various cities across the country: Minsk, Brest, Gomel, Grodno, Molodechno, Bobruisk, Vitebsk, and Mogilev. This number of participating theaters is the highest in the history of the contest.
