Belarus’ military delegation unhurt in Myanmar earthquake

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The Belarusian military delegation has not been injured in the recent earthquake in Myanmar, Natalya Gavrusik, an official representative of the Belarusian Defense Ministry, told BelTA.

“The military delegation, which is currently on an official visit to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar led by Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin, is safe and sound,” Natalya Gavrusik said.

As BelTA reported on 26 March, Belarusian Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin went on an official visit to Myanmar. The program of the visit includes a number of bilateral meetings and participation in the military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Myanmar on Friday, 28 March. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the quake was shallow, at a depth of just 10km, with the epicentre near the central city of Mandalay with the population of over 1.2 million. It was hit by a second strong aftershock of 6.4-magnitude around 12 minutes after the initial quake.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries and damage.
