Belarus might see treasures of nomads, mammoth skeleton from Rostov-on-Don

ROSTOV-ON-DON, 25 September (BelTA) – The Standing Committee of the Union State of Belarus and Russia intends to assist Belarus in organizing the exhibition of the unique artifacts from Azov History, Archaeology and Paleontology Museum-Reserve, State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Grigory Rapota told the media a meeting between Governor of Russia's Rostov Oblast Vasily Golubev and Executive Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Parliamentary Assembly Sergei Strelchenko and heads of the Belarusian mass media outlets. The meeting was held in Rostov-on-Don on 25 September.

Azov History, Archaeology and Paleontology Museum-Reserve, situated in Rostov Oblast of Russia, boasts rare historical artifacts that are the envy of museums throughout the world. For instance, one of the exhibits is a complete skeleton of the trogonterium mammoth that lived on the planet around 800,000-600,000 years ago. It is the only complete skeleton of trogonterium mammoth in the world. The remains were found during quarry operations near Azov.

The pride of the museum is the Treasures of Eurasian Nomads collection. It includes various jewelry, weapons and armor, about 20,000 items made of bronze, silver and gold. Among the exhibits there are a sword with a golden sheath, gold phalerae, bracelets and horse harness that were patterned after Greek and Roman jewelry of the I-II centuries AD. The museum boasts other valuable exhibits, for example, the largest collection of glazed ceramics of the 14th century. The museum‘s collections have been frequently showcased abroad in Japan, the UK and other countries. However, the museum has never had an exhibition in Belarus.

"It is a good idea that can be transformed into reality. I think, the governor and the staff of the museum will contribute to it," Grigory Rapota commented on the opportunity to time the exhibition of the Azov History, Archaeology and Paleontology Museum-Reserve to the opening of the museum quarter in Minsk.

Such an exhibition was suggested by journalists of the leading Belarusian and Russian mass media outlets during a media tour "The young of the Union State. Strengthening cultural relations" in Russia‘s Rostov Oblast. The tour was organized by the Standing Committee of the Union State.
