MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) – A large-scale ecological campaign called as Blue-eyed Belarus has been launched to preserve the country's natural heritage - picturesque lakes and rivers, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.
The campaign will last till 26 April. It has been organized by the State Inspectorate for Fauna and Flora Protection, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, local executive and administrative bodies and public associations.
The districts got actively involved in the work. For example, Vitebsk Oblast is tidying up the shores of lakes Polonskoe, Ostrovenskoe, Dvornoe, Beloe, Lesnoe, Kuzmino, Rossono and Chernoe and the banks of rivers Zapadnaya Dvina and Disna. In Gomel Oblast the focus is on Pridneprovsky Park. Minsk Oblast is cleaning up the shores of lakes Lesnoe, Vechera and Navranskoe and the banks of river Berezina, Soligorsk water reservoir, Izobelino quarry and Uzda reservoir.
The aim of the campaign is to tidy up and improve the areas near public water bodies and raise awareness about the need to protect nature. Plastic, household waste and other materials not only spoil the beauty of landscapes, but also damage ecosystems. Toxic substances get into the water, threatening flora and fauna, and decomposing garbage poisons the soil for decades.
The Blue-eyed Belarus action is an opportunity to preserve what makes the country unique: clear lakes, meandering rivers and boundless forests. Everyone can support the action. All you need to do is contact your local authorities. The campaign will cover hundreds of places all over the country, including Braslav lakes, banks of rivers Neman, Pripyat and other water bodies.
