Belarus, Latvia discuss renovations of border checkpoints

MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) – The customs authorities of Belarus and Latvia discussed the renovations of the adjacent border checkpoints, BelTA has learned from the State Border Committee of Belarus.

The border checkpoint Urbany hosted a meeting between officials of the Belarusian customs and border authorities, experts of the Customs Eastern and South-Eastern Land Border Expert Team (CELBET) and representatives of the Latvian customs and border authorities.

The participants of the meeting analyzed the surveys of the infrastructure and throughput capacity of the Urbany and Silene border checkpoints, discussed necessary measures in view of the renovations and steps to increase the throughput capacity, and talked over necessary changes in legislature, customs operations technologies, and infrastructure.

The customs officials also discussed the matters regarding simultaneous renovations of the adjacent border checkpoints.

The customs authorities of Belarus and Latvia informed CELBET of the positive experience of taking joint decisions and close cooperation to prevent queuing at Belarus-Latvia border.

The State Border Committee noted that full reconstruction of the Urbany checkpoint is underway. The renovated checkpoint will meet the modern European requirements. According to the cross-border cooperation program Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus 2014-2020 carried out within the framework of the international technical assistance project, this border checkpoint will be equipped with a modern customs inspection complex, pedestrian walkways for crossing the border on foot. Additional traffic lines between border checkpoints will be constructed.
