Belarus, Latvia agree to release radio frequencies for 5G

MINSK, 4 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian Communications and Informatization Ministry and the Latvian Transport Ministry have signed a protocol on cooperation in releasing the 694-790MHz radio-frequency band. The document was signed in Minsk as a result of negotiations between Belarusian Communications and Informatization Minister Konstantin Shulgan and Latvian Transport Minister Talis Linkaits, BelTA has learned.

Once the 694-790MHz radio-frequency band is no longer used for digital terrestrial television broadcasting, it will be possible to use it to develop mobile telecommunications networks relying on 5G technologies.

The arrangements will help introduce cutting-edge cellular communication systems in Belarus and Latvia and enable the fulfillment of the relevant decisions of the International Telecommunication Union.

A draft agreement on technical requirements for optimal and effective use of the 694-790MHz radio-frequency band in bordering territories will be worked out by 1 January 2020.
