Belarus Investigative Committee, American Express to exchange data about cybercrime

MINSK, 20 November (BelTA) – The Investigative Committee of Belarus and American Express signed a cooperation protocol that provides for, inter alia, the exchange of information on cybercrime. The document was signed by First Deputy Chairman of the Investigative Committee Aleksei Volkov and Vice President, Global Security, at American Express Brian Murphy, BelTA has learned.

The Central Office of the Investigative Committee is hosting representatives of international payment systems, including American Express, Visa International, Mastercard, international peer-to-peer bitcoin marketplace Paxful, and Belarus' currency.com. Our long-standing cooperation is advancing to a new level,” Aleksei Volkov said at the meeting. “Naturally, public-private partnership in combating cybercrime is of paramount importance. Therefore, we really appreciate the invitation to attend this meeting and we believe that it will be fruitful,” Brian Murphy said.

Aleksei Volkov underlined that the Investigative Committee has been maintaining contacts with cryptocurrency exchange platforms since they started operations in Belarus. “Our cooperation with various payment systems has even a longer history. This is not the first meeting with representatives of American Express. We discussed various cooperation options and the exchange of information and developed a legal framework for it. This resulted in signing this protocol of cooperation today. First of all, this will enable fast information exchange starting from detection of illegal transactions. I believe that one day we will be able to receive information with a higher level of sensitivity to be able to identify cybercriminals faster,” the Investigative Committee representative said.

A training seminar for investigators will take place on 20 November to discuss interaction mechanisms and options with international payment systems while detecting and investigating cybercrimes.
