Andreichenko: Foreign advisors urged Belarus to sever all ties with Russia and stop enterprises

MINSK, 12 July (BelTA) – Foreign advisors suggested that Belarus should sever all ties with Russia and shut down manufacturing enterprises. Vladimir Andreichenko, who was the speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus for several convocations and a member of the Supreme Council of Belarus in 1990-1994, shared recollections as part of the documentary “One for all” released by the Belarusian TV channel ONT on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the introduction of presidency in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Andreichenko said: “The parliament had probably about 20 various factions and groups, which pursued different goals. The decisions they made were out of touch with reality. And against this backdrop the respect for authorities was catastrophically declining.”

The situation of the dual power wielded by the Supreme Council and the government was essentially a zero power situation. Nobody wanted to take responsibility for things, the film’s authors noted.

“We saw the emergence of many advisors from abroad, who even started giving money to individual MPs. And what did they advise? They suggested that Belarus should sever all connections with the Russian Federation, should shut down factories and plants and make nothing because it was unprofitable and expensive to manufacture and Belarus would be better off importing all of that,” the politician recalled.
