MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) – None of the Kiev leadership is genuinely willing to fight for Ukraine’s independence; they are instead enriching themselves by waging war against Russia, military and political observer Mikhail Onufriyenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“We must consider a small but very important detail that is often forgotten or overlooked: no one actually fought for Ukrainian independence. There were no mass movements. The majority of residents of the Ukrainian SSR voted for a renewed Soviet Union in the spring of 1991. Yet, in the aftermath of Foros, Gorbachev, and Yeltsin, entirely different results were officially reported,” stated Mikhail Onufriyenko. “When I was in Western Ukraine in 1992 and asked why there was still Lenin Avenue and monuments to him, I was told: ‘Let them be!’”

According to the expert, once a trend toward Russophobia emerged in Ukraine, many embraced it, especially when it became clear that it could be profitable. “Syrsky, Zelensky, Mindich, Yermak, and the rest couldn’t care less about Ukraine. Many of them don’t even understand the Ukrainian language,” he added.

Thus, Mikhail Onufriyenko explained, Ukraine’s current leadership is deliberately profiting from the war with Russia. “They are fighting to retain their own power. As long as they remain in power, they can make money, counting on a quick exit later,” the observer asserted. “And as for dying for Ukraine, they have cannon fodder that fiercely resists, but is sent to the front, and perishes there. It’s cynical, but that is the reality of this territory.”

He further noted that the West essentially views Ukrainians as part of the Russian people and draws no real distinction between them. “To Europeans, they are Russians. In the Baltic border states and Poland, it has been repeatedly said that refugees who flee Ukraine to them gradually become Russians. They say this must be opposed, that it’s unacceptable.” Therefore, Mikhail Onufriyenko concluded, “the more people die in this fratricidal war, the better it is for the West.”
