Lukashenko: Tough times are ahead, we have to get united and move forward

MOGILEV, 14 December (BelTA) – The people of Belarus has to get united and move forward. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement as he presented the new Mogilev Oblast governor on 14 December, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko thanked his fellow Belarusians for support and resilience during last year's events. “You looked decent. And your governor [Mogilev Oblast former governor Leonid Zayats] was at the forefront like a tribune,” the president stated. “I thank you for protecting the country. And it obliges me to a lot.”

The head of state expects the next leader to also be as passionate about Belarus. “One has to retire sooner or later but what will happen to the country we've built with our own hands? Maybe something was not right but we created it the way we could. We built it out of the things we had as the song goes. We have no other country and have to preserve it,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.

“Tough times are ahead of us. We have to move forward. It is necessary to always start with the fundamental law if we want changes. But we have to change things for the better as much as we can today. If we leap forward and the people fail to understand us, we will break away from the people. Nobody wants that. We cannot make some holes in our society and in our policy because we don't have oil dollars, gas dollars to plug them later on,” the head of state stated. “This is why I ask you to be serious about forthcoming political events. Today we have to get united and move forward. I will not lead you where we shouldn't go, rest assured.”
