Lukashenko: The West keeps inventing reasons for sanctions against Belarus all the time

MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – Western countries and the USA keep inventing reasons to introduce more and more sanctions against Belarus. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement in an interview with Associated Press, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Why do I have to back you, Americans, the West if you enforce more and more sanctions, illegal sanctions against Belarus every month? We did nothing wrong to you. But you keep pressuring us, keep pressuring the people all the time. Why? What did we do to deserve your pressure? You kept inventing [reasons for enforcing the sanctions] all the time.”

In his words, Russia does not indulge in such behavior towards Belarus. The countries are close allies and support each other. “Why do I have to pursue a different policy towards Putin and Russia? A rhetorical question,” he stated.

Although they argue with the Russian leader at times, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted: “We had reasons for arguing and the reasons still stand. We talk about it. I even cite an example to him at times. I say: look at how Americans and Europeans support Ukraine and how they support each other by enabling equal conditions for all countries. Germans and Americans are sick and tired of Lithuania and Latvia already. Nevertheless, they forbearingly support them as they have agreed.”

Speaking about the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that equal conditions for individuals and corporations had yet to be enabled despite the common effort to resist the pressure of Western sanctions. “We discuss it sincerely. We are moving towards it little by little,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
