MINSK, 1 August (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has once again called on the European Union to abandon its confrontational approach and pursue cooperation with Russia. He made these remarks while answering journalists’ questions during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Valaam Island, BelTA reports.
“They shouldn’t be locking horns with us, but seek common ground. The European Union and Russia, if united, would become an unstoppable force. Of course, the Americans would never let this happen. They’re terrified by the prospect. It would frighten them more than [cooperation with] China ever could. United, they would be an unstoppable force. But EU politicians don’t understand this,” the head of state said. “Though perhaps they don’t want it. When I look at these leaders… Some are already on their way out – the so-called lame ducks. Others have just arrived, yet their ratings are below 20%. People dislike this policy.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that EU citizens don’t support their leadership’s policies toward Ukraine or massive military spending amid declining living standards: “They’re impoverishing themselves while funneling hundreds of billions – nearly trillions – into weapons and aid for Ukraine. That can’t be right.”
Commenting on the recent US-EU trade agreement, Aleksandr Lukashenko echoed Moscow’s view that it would accelerate Europe’s deindustrialization: “Though this process is already underway there. They’ll destroy Europe – the EU itself. There’s been talk that America aims to weaken this power center too. After all, the European Union wasn’t exactly weak. Well, now it’s happening.”
