Lukashenko briefed on case of German citizen sentenced to death in Belarus

MINSK, 30 July (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has met with people who are privy to the case of the German citizen sentenced to death in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“This is an extremely unpleasant topic for the president, but this topic needs very serious consideration. Rico Krieger is a citizen of Germany. It turned out that he was born in 1993. He was sentenced to death by a Belarusian court. In line with our Constitution and laws, the president always has the final say in such matters regardless of whether a convicted person asks for pardon. I have already said that the most difficult thing for the president is to deal with cases related to capital punishment. But a decision must be made. I just want to consult with you on this, to hear your opinion. You were directly involved in the consideration of this case,” the head of state noted.

According to the head of state, he invited the investigator and the lawyer who defended Rico Krieger in court. “And the person [KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel] who was the first to report to me about this sabotage act that fortunately did not kill anyone. As far as I know, that was not the only crime that the court found him [Rico Krieger] guilty of. Therefore, I ask you to provide the maximum information on this case before I make a decision,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Attending the meeting were also Deputy Head of the Belarus President Administration Olga Chupris, who oversees legal issues, and journalist Lyudmila Gladkaya, who covered the trial of the German citizen.

A reminder, Rico Krieger was found guilty of an act of terrorism, clandestine intelligence activities, mercenarism, creation of an extremist formation or participation in it, storing and carrying explosives and explosive devices, as part of an organized group, intentional damage to communication routes, which could result in a human casualty, wreck, accident and other serious consequences. For multiple crimes, he was sentenced to death.
