Lukashenko impressed by tour of Minsk Mechanical Plant

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko visited Minsk Mechanical Plant named after S.I. Vavilov, the managing company of the holding company BelOMO on 26 August, BelTA has learned.

The head of state went on a tour of the enterprise. He was made familiar with new R&D products in the sphere of optoelectronics. He was made familiar with manufacturing processes in a section that uses high-performance, high-precision numerically controlled machining centers.

Aleksandr Lukashenko told reporters: “It is a superb manufacturing facility. Well done. A facility where metalworkers and academicians pull as a team.”

The Belarusian Optical and Mechanical Organization (BelOMO Holding Company since 2011) is a recognized leader in optoelectronic instrument building. The history of the holding company BelOMO began in 1957 with the foundation of Minsk Mechanical Plant named after S.I. Vavilov. Today it is a universal individual group with versatile business interests specializing in developing and making laser, optoelectronic and optomechanical devices and systems. Those include not only defense products but medical goods, too.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed: “Money should be invested in the areas where we have competences. If there are some, we have to make things and raise standards up to and beyond the world level.”

The holding company also makes components of braking systems for heavy vehicles, household gas meters, infrared radiators (heaters) for general and local space heating, consumer goods (electric dryers, electric juicers, electric juicer-choppers), and many other things.

Creating ABS and EBS systems for braking systems of heavy trucks is one of the promising projects. BelOMO Director General Aleksandr Moroz told Aleksandr Lukashenko: “The demand is sky high. The entire Russia is lining up to buy it. We used to compete with them but now a market niche is available. Our job is to claim this niche.”
