Lukashenko comments on proposal to eliminate provision on neutrality from Constitution

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the proposal to eliminate a provision on neutrality from the Constitution as he summed up the results of the 6th Belarusian People's Congress in Minsk on 12 February, BelTA has learned.

“A pivotal question, first of all, for the president was raised. Different people, military and non-military, suggested constitutionalizing a principle which is opposite to neutrality. There is no neutrality, and, frankly speaking, Belarus has never pursued a course rigidly connected with neutrality. This is a constitutional norm. Life has been changing, and we had to adapt thinking that we should not change the Constitution. That is why, we, perhaps, need to discuss this issue with specialists and to revise these regulations,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

But first of all, it is essential to adopt a national security concept, the head of state said. “Discussing it, we will come up with constitutional amendments in this regard,” he said.
