MOZYR, 6 November (BelTA) – It is important Belarusians buy local products, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he spoke during the opening ceremony for the renovated bridge over the Pripyat River in Mozyr on 6 November, BelTA has learned.
“Everyone wants to buy from Gucci and Versace. I'm just sometimes surprised why you spend so much money on nonsense. Buy your own [Belarusian] products, and you'll look just fine. Come forward and suggest ideas on," the head of state said. “We gave our light industry a push, we installed new executive team there. We’ll see how they are doing. We have everything. We have plenty of leather to make a leather coat or a jacket. There's a large enterprise in Gatovo near Minsk. We have everything. We can make footwear."
Aleksandr Lukashenko added that Belarusian products are in high demand at various trade fairs in Russia: "By evening, there's nothing left. And people are asking, 'Why did the Belarusians bring so little?' Now they stock up for a week. Trucks head there, we transport goods to supply the people. People are happy to buy them.”
The president noted that while people strive to buy foreign brands, domestic enterprises that produce similar goods struggle to sell theirs. “You could have bought from this [Belarusian] enterprise. Maybe it's a bit simpler. You should buy local [products] even if they might fall short of quality standards of the ‘great’ [brands]. Though now they are not as they used to be [referring to various kinds of counterfeits or declining quality of original products). Well, you should buy your own. This means that by buying this, you've paid a local enterprise. This means they will receive money," the head of state explained.

Aleksandr Lukashenko cited the construction of the bridge in Mozyr as an example. Initially, the execution term was set at 30 months, but it was completed in 24, and by domestic organizations at that. However, there were other proposals. “Foreigners offered to do it in 20 [months]. I said, 'No, thank you, I'll stick with our own for now’. And the prices would have been lower. I didn't jump at these proposals. Because if a foreigner comes, it's not certain they would use Belarusian asphalt concrete (and we know how to produce that). It's not certain the guardrails and railings would be domestically produced. They would bring them from abroad. That means they would pay their own people. And our enterprises would sit idle. And most importantly, our people wouldn't receive their wages. I didn't jump at it. No, I said, let our own people do it. One bridge, a second one, a third," the Belarusian leader emphasized.
