Belarus interested in closer cooperation with Georgia in all fields

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) - Belarus pays much attention to the cooperation with Georgia and is going to do its best to promote this cooperation across the board, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with Ambassador of Georgia to Belarus Valeri Kvaratskhelia on 4 December, BelTA informs.

The head of state emphasized that after the presidential election in Georgia it is important to synchronize watches for the development of the Belarusian-Georgian interaction. “First of all, I want to congratulate you that this political battle is over. I believe that this is an important political campaign which will show the aspirations and ambitions of the Georgian society like a piece of litmus paper.”

The president remarked that there was a serious battle and that he was keeping an eye on it. “The election was a success. I congratulate you personally as an ambassador, Georgian people that the political period is over. Please convey the best wishes to the elected president,” the head of state continued. “A woman was elected president for the first time in Georgia. Maybe, this will also be a good experience on the post-Soviet space. We'll see. Belarus and our society will keep an eye on this experience.”

Alexander Lukashenko spoke in positive terms about the Belarusian-Georgian cooperation. “Trade and economic relations are always the foundation. Our trade is increasingly vibrant, and we started from zero some time ago,” he stressed.

The head of state said that Deputy Prime Minister is on a visit in Georgia now. “We are paying more attention to our relations with the friendly and brotherly nation of Georgia and are eager to promote this cooperation across the board,” Alexander Lukashenko emphasized.

The president said that humanitarian contacts are developing. “You are aware of the attitude to Georgian people in Belarus. Belarusians like the Georgian [culture festival] Tbilisoba,” he said.

Belarus and Georgia have an action plan for the development of cooperation. “We are eager ti meet with the new president of Georgia, the new government. After my visit the government was renewed there, and it will be very important to synchronize watches,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

In March 2018, the Belarusian head of state paid an official visit to Georgia. During the visit the sides signed a cooperation agreement. This document envisages the development of all-round mutually beneficial cooperation. The legal framework of the Belarusian-Georgian cooperation includes 60 bilateral agreements and international documents various levels. In 2015, Belarus supported Georgia in the elections to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period of 2016-2018. In 2017, Belarus voted for Georgia in the election of the secretary general of the World Tourism Organization for the period of 2018-2021. In 2017, the Belaruaian-Georgian trade made up $93.5 million. It increased by 26% over 2016. In January-September 2018, the trade turnover reached $62 million.

The sides are interested in the further development of the trade and economic cooperation.
