Vatican’s representative describes policy of isolating countries as ‘suicidal’

MINSK, 27 October (BelTA) - The policy of isolating countries and nations is suicidal and does not contribute to conflict resolution, Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches in the Vatican, told the media after his meeting with the Belarusian president in Minsk on 27 October, BelTA has learned.
“For us, isolation is unacceptable - to isolate peoples, countries... This is a policy that, in fact, only brings harm. It is a suicidal policy. All people of good will must work together and cooperate to end the war,” the Vatican representative said. “For us, it is fundamental that every people, every country should have rights. Every people is important. Peoples must be supported so that they can develop.”
Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti noted that during his visit to Belarus, he sees many young people who view the world positively and with joy. “This potential cannot be discarded. It is a great gift,” he emphasized.

The Vatican’s representative stated that the Catholic Church maintains good relations with the Orthodox Church, and there are topics on which the parties cooperate. “We are seeking opportunities to somehow jointly address the problematic, dramatic situation in Ukraine that the Orthodox are facing,” Claudio Gugerotti said. “We are taking every possible step to avoid a policy of division. On the contrary [we promote] cooperation so that unity and peace may come.”

The Vatican’s representative noted that the Belarusian president is concerned about the security problem in the region, but this problem currently exists for all countries in the world. “We believe that in order to solve these security problems, we need to strive for what unites us and to take concrete steps. There are never eternal enemies. We must make every effort to shorten this time of enmity and conflict and make it gone. God's project is peace, well-being, and beauty. Everything we do to achieve this is pleasing to God,” Claudio Gugerotti emphasized.

Speaking on the topic of sanctions, he stated that their impact is most often felt by ordinary people, whether in terms of rising prices for certain goods or the difficulty of traveling to certain countries.

"This contributes neither to dialogue nor to development," the Vatican’s representative is convinced.
