Turkmenistan set to assume CIS chairmanship in 2026

DUSHANBE, 10 October (BelTA) - Turkmenistan will assume the CIS chairmanship on 1 January 2026. This decision was made at the CIS summit in in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 10 October, BelTA has learned.

The decision made by the heads of the CIS member states was announced by President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, the country chairing the CIS this year. “Just now, during our restricted-format meeting, we thoroughly discussed pressing issues of our interaction and adopted a number of important decisions. I am confident that through our joint efforts we will achieve the practical implementation of the set goals and objectives,” the president of Tajikistan said. “A decision was made at the CIS Heads of State Council meeting that in January 2026 the CIS chairmanship will pass to Turkmenistan.”

Emomali Rahmon noted that Tajikistan's activities during its chairmanship were aimed at achieving practical results in implementing cooperation within the CIS.

According to him, the current summit's agenda includes items on further joint efforts to counter terrorism and extremism, strengthen border and develop military cooperation, as well as promote energy stability. Plans are also in place to adopt joint statements on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and the anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, which reflect a common will to strengthen international peace and security. Among the important decisions of the summit are the creation of a CIS Plus format and granting the SCO observer status in the CIS. “I see this as an important step towards expanding the international cooperation of the CIS,” Emomali Rahmon said.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedow of Turkmenistan expressed gratitude for the decision for Ashgabat to chair the CIS in 2026. According to him, Turkmenistan views this as a testament to the respect and trust from all the CIS member states. Serdar Berdimuhamedow assured that Turkmenistan will approach the chairmanship with full responsibility and a complete understanding of the scale and level of the tasks to be addressed.

“Our goal for the period of the chairmanship is to provide comprehensive assistance in strengthening cooperation and partnership among the member states to maximize the potential of the CIS, ensure the effective development of the CIS states, and increase the prosperity and quality of life of our peoples,” the president of Turkmenistan said. He also described the CIS as one of the factors contributing to the resilience of the international security system.
