ASTANA, 1 September (BelTA - Kazinform) - The SCO has the potential to become a global leader in the rapid development of artificial intelligence, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan said during his speech at the SCO summit in Tianjin, China on 1 September, BelTA has learned.

He emphasized that this issue cannot be postponed. By 2033, the global AI market is expected to reach $5 trillion, accounting for up to 30% of the global tech industry.

“Compared to other strategic areas, the pace of development in this field is exceptionally fast. I am convinced that the SCO is capable of taking a leading position globally in terms of AI advancement. This is why we fully support China’s proposal to establish a global organization for cooperation in artificial intelligence. We are ready to make a meaningful contribution to this important endeavor. Kazakhstan advocates for expanding cooperation across the full spectrum of digitalization, including the implementation of smart solutions in various sectors such as the economy, healthcare, transport, logistics, and urban management systems,” the president said.

As a concrete step in this direction, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed the establishment of a permanent SCO expert forum on artificial intelligence.

“We are willing to host the first meeting in Astana as part of the prestigious Digital Bridge forum. In addition, our country intends to organize a high-level conference ‘Artificial Intelligence in SCO Economic Activity’ in 2027. Next year, together with media representatives from SCO member states, we are prepared to discuss the challenges of information policy in the new technological era,” he stated.

The SCO summit, held on 31 August-1 September in Tianjin, China, is the largest in the organization’s history. More than 30 heads of state and leaders of international organizations were invited to attend.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001. China assumed the presidency of the SCO in July 2024 following the SCO summit in Astana.
