MINSK, 16 August (BelTA) – The European Union can ease sanctions on Russia if Vladimir Putin commits to a ceasefire in Ukraine, The Daily Telegraph cited sources saying, TASS informs.
According to the source, any such move by Brussels would be contingent upon Moscow demonstrating willingness to make concessions within a certain timeframe which was not specified.
According to the article, EU ambassadors are currently meeting for emergency talks in Brussels following Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting in Alaska on 15 August. “The senior diplomats are discussing what the EU could offer to bring about a truce in Ukraine. The Europeans are yet to decide on what time frame they will put on their offer to ease sanctions in exchange for a truce,” The Daily Telegraph writes.
In the lead-up to the Putin-Trump meeting, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta ruled out any potential easing of sanctions against Russia should a ceasefire occur as part of diplomatic settlement in Ukraine, dismissing media leaks on the subject as pure speculation.
