Press secretary: Lukashenko insisted on organizing a presidential election in 2020

MINSK, 4 August (BelTA) – Last year's presidential election could have been rescheduled but the head of state Aleksandr Lukashenko insisted on organizing it within the stipulated timeframe. Press Secretary of the President of Belarus Natalya Eismont made the statement in a series of documentaries titled as Belarus Against Color Revolution. The first episode was aired by the Belarusian TV channel STV on 4 August, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Eismont noted that during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic the Belarusian society was extremely tense since everyone saw what was going on in the world. Opponents of the current government exploited the situation.

The official went on saying: “The president admitted he did not pay attention to campaigning per se. He was focused on people's health and lives. In the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, and sometimes at night – he would receive summary reports dozens of times per day. Every person attached to an artificial lung was on the radar. Every death was analyzed.”

“All kinds of proposals were made. It would have been so much simpler to declare a lockdown, keep people in their homes, and forbid them from going outside completely. And even reschedule the presidential election. Anything at all could have been done using COVID-19 as a reason back then and the society would have accepted it. But the president said that the election would be held precisely according to the Constitution,” the press secretary said.
