PM talks about Belarus’ value for Shanghai Cooperation Organization

ISLAMABAD, 16 October (BelTA) - Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko made remarks at a meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council in Islamabad on 16 October, BelTA has learned.

"You may wonder how Belarus can be useful to the organization? As a representative of the European region, we are able and ready to organically contribute to the cooperation within the SCO in economy and security through our transit, industrial and scientific potential, and our experience in peacekeeping and multilateral diplomacy. Belarus has a highly productive agriculture, well-developed agricultural science, agricultural engineering, food industry and is one of the world's leading fertilizer producers. All this creates prerequisites for successful cooperation in the field of food security. We have good experience and competencies in IT, serious developments in science, industry, and energy. I am sure that the use of this potential will provide good synergy," Roman Golovchenko said.

He also noted that important transport corridors from Asia to Europe go through Belarus within the framework of the Belt and Road project. "We are taking part in the development of the International North–South Transport Corridor and the Northern Sea Route. We are ready to promote the topic of transport and logistics in every possible way," the prime minister stressed.

"We joined the SCO at a time when the organization has matured for comprehensive modernization in the light of the current geopolitical realities.  This is due to the growing number of members of the SCO family and the importance of ensuring its effective work. We are ready to participate in improving the statutory documents and regulations, the structure and forms of work of the Secretariat and the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure. We support events in the SCO+ format, which has been tested under Kazakhstan's chairmanship. I believe that the SCO, which was created mainly as a platform for promoting cooperation in security and political dialogue, has now accumulated sufficient experience and a legal framework that allow for serious progress in practical areas, including economy," the Belarusian head of government said.
