MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ accession to the Board of Peace aligns with the national interests. This serves as further evidence of the authority of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and the correctness of the foreign policy of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, told the media in Minsk on 22 January, BelTA has learned.
“Concerns that the Board of Peace could replace the UN, strengthen U.S. hegemony or create a counterweight to the SCO and BRICS are, in my view, unfounded. This international body can contribute to a more balanced world, and, to some extent, reduce dependence on the growing unilateral actions by the United States," Sergei Rachkov believes.
He stated that nothing can replace the legitimate global organization as its structure and operations are built on the universal principles. The UN is a framework for interstate dialogue and cooperation on an equal footing. The Board of Peace is a club of state leaders whose authority and experience can be utilized to resolve major international and regional conflicts.
“Yes, the UN needs modernizing. But years of discussions on reform are at a standstill due to the differing interests of member states. At the same time, life goes on and presents the international community with new challenges, including that of a new global war, which can no longer be sidestepped. Perhaps the Board of Peace can reach agreements more quickly than the UN Security Council? Or at least it can draw up proposals which could then be adopted through the legitimate body that is the UN Security Council,” the MP said.
He noted that, in any case, attempts to propose fresh approaches to issues of global governance, even when tied to their own national interests, merit attention. They also indicate that the United States has seriously taken note of the process of the emerging multipolar world order and does not want (and can no longer) remain on the sidelines.
