MFA: Belarus seeks to deepen cooperation with IAEA

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) - Head of the Belarusian delegation at the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vienna, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta held a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi, BelTA has learned.

The parties discussed current areas of cooperation and prospects for future work, as well as exchanged views on key issues of the international agenda.

According to the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Igor Sekreta informed the director general about the country’s plans to expand nuclear power generation in line with the forecasted growth in domestic energy consumption. He emphasized Belarus’ interest in further strengthening cooperation with the IAEA at all stages of the implementation of its nuclear energy program.

Igor Sekreta noted the significance for Belarus of its partnership with the IAEA, which began with projects to restore territories affected by the Chernobyl disaster, and highly praised the Agency’s contribution to the implementation of these programs.

The deputy minister highlighted the document signed in August 2025 on practical arrangements between the IAEA and the Polesie State Radioecological Reserve. The reserve conducts unique radiation monitoring, carries out scientific research of importance to the entire international community, and performs work on the remediation of contaminated lands.

The Belarusian diplomat thanked the IAEA for its support in strengthening the nuclear and radiation safety regime. He noted that the assessment mission on the education and training system in November 2025 had highly evaluated the national system for training radiation safety specialists and the work of the relevant institutions.

The parties also discussed efforts to ensure nuclear safety at the regional level. The deputy minister drew attention to the recent incident at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, noting Belarus’ serious concern about the potential cross-border consequences of such events, as well as the lack of prompt notification as required by international and bilateral obligations.

The Belarusian representative emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and the timely exchange of information in nuclear safety.

Rafael Mariano Grossi stressed the importance of all countries consistently fulfilling their international obligations.
