Lavrov suspects USA intelligence services knew about preparations to assassinate Lukashenko

MOSCOW, 24 May (BelTA) – Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov believes that preparations to assassinate Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko could not have proceeded without U.S. intelligence services' knowledge. The minister of foreign affairs made the relevant statement in an interview with the Argumenty i fakty newspaper, BelTA has learned.

Asked to comment on preparations for the assassination of Aleksandr Lukashenko, Sergey Lavrov said: “The attempt to stage an armed coup in Belarus involving a U.S. citizen matches the Western policy in favor of interfering in domestic affairs of post-Soviet countries using the entire arsenal of color revolutions rather well. One can hardly imagine that actions of this scale can be organized without the knowledge of American intelligence services. An analogy with the coup in Ukraine in February 2014 comes to one's mind.”

“Due to the threat to his life Aleksandr Lukashenko had to take an extraordinary step. On 9 May he signed a presidential ordinance specifying that power over the republic will be transferred to the Security Council in an emergency,” the official reminded.
