MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Larisa Belskaya addressed the plenary session of the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on 20 January, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian diplomat congratulated Mongolia on the start of its presidency of the Conference and wished it success in this challenging period of activity. “The crisis in international relations and the ongoing transformation of the global geopolitical landscape are accompanied by rising tensions, an increase in conflict potential, and further fragmentation of the international security system. All this is reflected in the work of the Conference on Disarmament, exacerbating long-standing problems and generating new challenges,” Larisa Belskaya said.

“The disregard by a number of countries for the principles of equal and indivisible security, attempts to expand their sphere of influence at any cost, including through NATO enlargement, and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states have become the trigger for an unprecedented crisis of trust and the degradation of the security architecture on the European continent, which erupted into the conflict in Ukraine. Unfortunately, this conflict continues despite the efforts of many states, including the USA, China, Brazil, Türkiye, and my own country, Belarus, to facilitate the launch of a peace negotiation process,” the Belarusian representative said.

Larisa Belskaya stated that in the past and the beginning of this year, the world watched with alarm unprecedented events of armed aggression against Iran and Venezuela, threatening a significant undermining of security in the Middle Eastern and Latin American regions.

“We see how the escalation of interstate contradictions and the persistent implementation of the principle of achieving peace through force are stimulating an increase in military spending, fueling the spiral of an arms race, including in outer space,” the diplomat remarked. “Armed conflicts are being used as testing grounds for new types of weapons and military technologies. It is time to consider the price paid for this progress by the people dying in conflicts, turning into migrants and refugees.”
