CSTO to strengthen interaction with UN, CIS, SCO

MOSCOW, 7 February (BelTA) - The CSTO will be working to strengthen interaction with the UN, CIS and SCO, CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov a meeting of chairmen of committees (commissions) of parliaments of the CSTO member states that oversee international relations, defense and security in Moscow on 7 February, BelTA learned from the CSTO press service.

"Promoting interaction with international organizations, primarily the UN, CIS and SCO will remain an important area for the CSTO and its Secretariat," Imangali Tasmagambetov said.

According to him, the United Nations is the CSTO's leading international partner. "Objectively, the interests of the CSTO and the UN in maintaining peace and security coincide. We will consistently develop cooperation, first of all in the areas of peacekeeping, combating terrorism and drug trafficking, and countering threats in international information security," the CSTO head assured.

"We are generally satisfied with the development of our interaction with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and the executive director of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee, and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime within the framework of the existing memoranda. We are interested in further expanding this cooperation.  We have gained effective practical experience over the years, have developed the methods of cooperation to deprive international terrorist organizations of a fertile ground. They are implemented mainly on the basis of planned operational and preventive measures carried out by the competent bodies of CSTO member states, such as operations "Channel", "PROXY", "Illegal" and "Mercenary". Their goal is to systemically counter illegal drug trafficking, suppress illegal migration and prevent the use of information and communication technologies in the interests of international terrorist structures, to block the channels of recruitment, entry/exit of citizens of our states to participate in terrorist activities and neutralize the resource base of terrorist organizations," Imangali Tasmagambetov noted.

"In accordance with the CSTO Collective Security Council’s resolution ‘On plans to develop CSTO Cooperation with the CIS and the SCO’ of 23 November 2022, the CSTO Secretariat is systematically working with the above-mentioned organizations. Meetings of the highest administrative officials of the CSTO, the CIS and the SCO are held on a regular basis to exchange opinions on a wide range of problems of mutual interest," the CSTO chief said.

In his opinion, strengthening regional security and stability in Eurasia is inextricably linked to the further development of the trilateral format of interaction between the CSTO and the CIS and the SCO. "We believe that these three organizations, close in spirit and in political priorities, can set the tone for efforts to create a new continental security architecture, to align integration projects and harmonize relations between the development centers in Eurasia," Imangali Tasmagambetov stressed.
