MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Ministerial consultations to discuss interaction of the CIS member states with UNESCO were held at the CIS headquarters in Minsk on 21 August, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.
The consultations were attended by representatives from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the CIS Executive Committee. The parties welcomed the upcoming 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference to be held in Samarkand on 30 October – 13 November 2025, and exchanged views on matters of substance and procedure in preparation for the session, notably concerning elections to the organization’s governing and subsidiary organs.
Representatives of the foreign ministries of the CIS member states shared their thoughts on the outcomes of the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee and explored the possibility of putting forward joint nominations for the World Heritage List.
The meeting addressed key aspects of coordinating the activities of the CIS member states in UNESCO, including through their national commissions for UNESCO. They also stressed the need to boost the role of national commissions in UNESCO’s programs, enhance their collaboration, and share best practices both in formal sessions and on the sidelines of meetings.
They emphasized the need to preserve UNESCO’s intergovernmental and depoliticized character. Furthermore, they advocated for increased collaboration through jointly organized events, like Russian Language Day, ensuring participation in UNESCO events across CIS member states, and providing mutual support for new initiatives.
The next round of consultations on interaction with UNESCO is planned for 2026.
