Chinese expert: Trade protectionism undermines regional cooperation

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – Vice-President of the China Institute of International Studies Liu Qing addressed the challenges in Eurasia during a working session of the 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, BelTA has learned.

“Eurasia is home to the world’s largest population. However, the region not only reaps benefits from globalization but also faces numerous serious challenges, including threats in both economy and security,” Liu Qing said.

He noted that the Eurasian region lies at the intersection of various risks. “From an economic perspective, the existence of multiple contradictions has led to complex risks. On the one hand, uneven development is becoming more evident. A gap exists between developed and developing countries, as some nations have a weak industrial base and insufficient industrial resilience. On the other hand, the geopolitical crisis in Europe has triggered fluctuations in energy prices. Countries dependent on energy imports find themselves in a difficult position. Meanwhile, climate change has impacted key environmental issues in producer regions such as Central and Southeast Asia. Fluctuations in grain production directly threaten supply stability in the region,” the expert stated.
Even more alarming, in his opinion, is that the rise of trade protectionism is undermining the fruits of regional cooperation. “Some countries are artificially creating trade barriers and hindering the progress of regional economic integration,” Liu Qing added. Consequently, energy shortages increase the cost of security cooperation. “Terrorist activities damage the investment environment, while trade barriers intensify competition for resources,” he emphasized.

According to the expert, it is crucial to understand the interconnection between the economy and security. These two aspects are not isolated from each other.
The 3rd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security is taking place on 28-29 October. The event is held under the auspices of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Delegations from over 40 countries and 7 international organizations are participating in the conference. Among the attendees are foreign ministers, heads of integration associations, and representatives of parliaments, research institutes, and think tanks from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
