MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – Illegitimate sanctions used as a tool of political coercion deter the world’s potential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, BelTA learned from Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

Sergei Aleinik made a speech at a joint session of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic. The joint session took place in Moscow on 27 November.

The Belarusian senator remarked that this meeting represented an opportunity to compare notes on topical aspects of interaction in the context of ongoing global processes. He added that items on the agenda of the joint session reflect the importance of avenues of cooperation within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.
The chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission said: “Today our countries stand against the united West, which is waging a hybrid war on us in economy, in politics, and in mass media. Illegitimate sanctions used as a tool of political coercion, trade wars and forex wars, protectionism, restrictions on access to innovations, technologies, and investments, visa restrictions, unilateral closure of borders, and air blockades deter not only the potential of our states but the world’s overall potential for reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Sergei Aleinik stated: “We are in favor of rebooting the international security system, in favor of enhancing international peace and security, in favor of abandoning the illegitimate sanctions-based policy. Belarus and Russia constantly implement programs of concerted actions in the field of foreign policy of the states parties to the Union State Foundation Treaty. After the Security Concept of the Union State and the interstate Treaty on Security Guarantees within the framework of the Union State were signed on 6 December 2024, we achieved an unprecedented level of strategic allied relations and action coordination, including to prevent interference in domestic affairs of our states.”

Apart from that, the chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission pointed out that in the context of economic development energy security plays a special role. “In this regard Belarus-Russia interaction in peaceful uses of nuclear energy plays an important role. The Belarusian nuclear power plant has become the most technologically sophisticated and largest project in the history of Belarusian-Russian relations. The nuclear power plant works for the benefit of the economy and produces a tangible effect: the country has completely stopped importing electricity and natural gas consumption has been reduced. The Belarusian nuclear power plant has also become a driver of development of allied branches of the economy. The implementation of an entire range of innovative projects has been launched: in the manufacturing sector, in science, in healthcare. For the sake of satisfying the growing demand for electricity in the future the head of state has decided in favor of building the third unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in the country,” the senator stressed.

Sergei Aleinik is convinced that in modern conditions it is important not only to preserve technological sovereignty but also to secure the technological leadership of Belarus and Russia. “Economic growth, rising prosperity and the quality of life of the people directly depend on efficient use of results of scientific research, assimilation of innovations by the manufacturing sector, the transfer of results of innovative efforts to the end consumer,” the senator noted. “The strategy on scientific and technological development of the Union State till 2035 is aimed at ensuring the independence and the competitive ability primarily by leveraging intellectual potential, cutting-edge scientific research, technological renewal of the economy branches that are traditional for Belarus and Russia. It is important to preserve the pace of realization of practically oriented projects within the framework of Union State programs.”

“We hope that a peaceful and happy future of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will be secured by the next generations, who will pick up the baton and make the Union State stronger in addition to developing it,” Sergei Aleinik continued. “This is why we have to continue developing our joint integration future on the platform of the continuity of generations, including the generation that won the war. In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory we recall our past, our common heroic history in order not to forget its lessons and pass on the historic truth about events of the Great Patriotic War [of 1941-1945] to young generations.”
In his opinion, Belarusian-Russian youth cooperation is of huge significance. The patriotic aspect is expected to play a special role in it. It is obvious that the pooling of efforts in personnel training in today’s rapidly changing conditions is also an important factor in securing the competitive ability of the economies of Belarus and Russia.

“The active involvement of young people in economic, social and humanitarian, and scientific projects of the Union State [of Belarus and Russia] will contribute to preserving the intensity of the integration process. Without a doubt the upbringing of a new generation of specialists and executives is heavily influenced by education activities within the framework of Belarus-Russia youth interaction, by the formation of a new generation of professionals, who will accomplish the important tasks the Union State faces,” he pointed out.

As the head of a delegation of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Aleinik is visiting Moscow on 27-28 November. The main goal is to participate in a joint session of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic. The joint sessions are now held regularly. Parliamentary diplomacy is an important factor in advancing Belarus-Russia cooperation and in deepening the integration within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. It is also an important factor for stepping up coordination and interaction across the entire spectrum of matters on the international agenda.
