Belarus, Myanmar build up cooperation in electoral matters

MINSK, 26 December (BelTA) – Belarus and Myanmar intend to reinforce bilateral cooperation in electoral matters as well as interaction within the framework of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB), representatives of Belarus’ CEC told BelTA.

A Belarusian delegation led by Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Aleksei Bashan met with Chairman of the Union Election Commission of Myanmar Than Soe in Naypyidaw. The parties exchanged views on the peculiarities of organizing election campaigns in Belarus and Myanmar as well as the need for joint efforts to protect electoral sovereignty from external interference.

The Belarusian side expressed support for the actions of the Union Election Commission of Myanmar in organizing parliamentary elections as a compromise solution to internal problems and strengthening dialogue and harmony in society. Deputy Chairman of Belarus’ CEC Aleksei Bashan stressed that the parliamentary elections are a purely internal matter for Myanmar and that the organization of this process must comply with Myanmar’s legislation and national interests.
