MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) - The Consulate General of the Republic of Belarus officially opened in Chongqing on 28 January, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in China.
The opening of the consular institution was timed to coincide with the 29th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the People's Republic of China.
The ceremony was attended by Belarusian Ambassador to China Yuri Senko, Chongqing Vice Mayor Li Bo, representatives of the Department for Consular Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, departments and districts of the People's Government of Chongqing, consuls general of the diplomatic corps of foreign countries accredited in the region.
In his speech, the Belarusian ambassador hailed the active and substantive cooperation between Chongqing and Minsk Oblast. The diplomat also noted that Belarus occupies an important geographical position on the Belt and Road land routes, which creates many opportunities for cooperation.
The parties expressed hope that the opening of the consulate general will help boost trade, economic, investment, and humanitarian cooperation between Belarus and Chongqing, and also the entire consular district which also includes Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, and Yunnan provinces with a total population of 345 million people.
After the ceremony, Ambassador Yuri Senko held a meeting with Chairman of the People's Government of Chongqing Tang Liangzhi. The parties discussed a wide range of issues related to bilateral relations between Belarus and the Chinese region, and took note of the promising areas for cooperation in trade, investment, logistics, and humanitarian affairs.
It was decided to adopt a joint roadmap for cooperation.
Currently, there are four Belarusian foreign diplomatic missions in China: the Belarusian Embassy in Beijing and consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing.
