"On Point"
MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – In what ways does the patronage and protection of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk manifest in the history of modern Belarus? This was discussed by tour guide Sofia Macharashvili and blogger Ksenia Leshchinskaya in the latest episode of the V Teme. Nashi [On Point. The Nation’s Pride] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“How does this manifest itself? Everyone has their own understanding: some are closer to this subject, others are more distant, but people don't just go to church for no reason. As Patriarch Alexy II said, 'If we don't build churches, we will build prisons.' We must pray for our children, for our wonderful youth, because we want to live in peace,” Sofia Macharashvili noted.
Not every nation has such saints, the speakers noted. “If we speak of patronage in the broad sense, it is about both sovereignty and culture,” blogger Ksenia Leshchinskaya said.
The speakers believethat thanks in part to Euphrosyne of Polotsk and her significant work, modern Belarus is now an independent state with a clear national identity.
“The Belarusian land is remarkable because here, under the patronage of Euphrosyne of Polotsk, people of more than 150 ethnicities and 25 confessions live peacefully and harmoniously,” the tour guide said.
Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk became the first woman in Eastern Europe to be canonized by the Church. Many generations consider her the patron saint and protectress of Belarus.
