MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Vietnam with concurrent accreditation to Myanmar Vladimir Borovikov has commented on the situation around a Belarusian woman, who is missing in Myanmar, BelTA has learned.
Vladimir Borovikov said: “Since 9 October the application from a citizen of the Republic of Belarus with a request to provide assistance with finding her daughter in Myanmar and Thailand has been a priority of the diplomatic mission. Once the application was received, without delay and according to the established procedure the embassy sent queries to foreign policy and law enforcement bodies of these countries and established direct contacts.”
“The offices of Belarus’ honorary consulates in Bangkok, Thailand and Yangon, Myanmar have been engaged in order to achieve the task,” the diplomat stressed.
According to the ambassador, it has been ascertained that the missing woman left Bangkok for Yangon by air on 20 September.
“No additional credible information about her whereabouts and the legal status has been received. Search efforts continue in Myanmar now,” the diplomat added. “Upon receiving information the embassy will act within its competence to provide all the necessary aid and assistance to the affected citizens of the Republic of Belarus. We’d like to point out that the diplomatic mission works only with official data and documents. We can only regret the immoral and irresponsible behavior of certain individuals, who distribute untrue and unverified information for the sake of hype, thus making the relatives and friends of the missing woman suffer even more.”
“Due to the spread of information about the missing Belarusian woman in Myanmar we would like to note the following. It is public knowledge that fraud centers operate in Myanmar and are concentrated primarily at the border with Thailand. Regretfully, the government’s efforts to crack down on this phenomenon have not reversed the situation so far. Although they have managed to eliminate a number of so-called enterprises. The embassy has no information about citizens of the Republic of Belarus, who are involved in criminal activities, or about the number of citizens of the Republic of Belarus working for such centers. At the same time a handful of cases have been registered. For instance, in March 2024 a Belarusian woman, who had been illegally detained in such a center, came back to the home country as a result of tight interaction between the Belarusian side and authorities of Myanmar and Thailand,” he remarked.
Vladimir Borovikov stressed: “The embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus have repeatedly drawn attention to this fact and have called upon citizens to attentively and thoroughly examine the job offers coming from this region and be careful about moneymaking opportunities. Be vigilant and don’t expose yourselves to unnecessary risks. In an emergency citizens can contact the embassy via hotlines. We are always ready to come to the rescue.”
