Flax festival in progress in Belarusian town of Korma

KORMA DISTRICT, 2 August (BelTA) – The Flax Carousel festival has begun in the town of Korma, Korma District, Gomel Oblast, BelTA has learned.

Korma District is famous for its traditions. Many generations of this land have maintained special respect for flax as a crop. And like for many centuries in a row nowadays flax is grown in this area and the traditions of this ancient craft are preserved. Industrial processing facilities for this crop have been established.
Flax has also become a symbol of the festival, which has attracted hundreds and thousands of guests from various parts of Belarus and neighboring countries for many years. For the eighth time the festival parade has brought together hundreds of connoisseurs of folk treasures.

Today a symbolic carousel has been set up in the central square under a canopy of colorful flags. In its center is a large pole decorated with bundles of flax and woven flowers. Next to it is a figure of the mythical girl Klyusymka, the protector of flax fields. People believe that this modest beautiful girl gave flax seeds to the people many centuries ago. Representatives of artistic delegations danced around it in a friendly circle. Guests from various regions of the country as well as from Russia’s Bryansk Oblast and Tver Oblast came to the flax festival. The parade was harmoniously complemented by 12 beautiful girls in costumes made of natural materials and herbs, who will compete for the Klyusymka 2025 title.
At the grand opening of the festival everyone was greeted by Dmitry Shinkarenko, Chairman of the Korma District Executive Committee. “I welcome everyone who responded to the call of our festival with their hearts. This is a celebration of art, craftsmanship, friendship, and unity. This unique project is aimed at preserving and enriching our historical and cultural heritage. I am convinced that everyone here will find something interesting for themselves, and their souls will be warmed by the melodies of their favorite folk songs,” he said. The official wished everyone good health, happiness, and prosperity. The head of the district administration received a symbolic bundle of flax as a gift.

Guests of the festival are welcome to visit the interactive venues Linen Tavern and Flax Gastrofest. The most active and energetic participants are invited to master classes focusing on Belarusian folk dances, flax weaving, spinning, and souvenir making. Connoisseurs of traditional folk and authentic farmsteads are warmly welcomed.
The artisan’s town included a museum of linen crafts from the city of Vyshny Volochek in Russia’s Tver Oblast. It attracted visitors with natural aromas of herbs. Everyone was fascinated by unusual herb weaving.

A hospitable table was set by representatives of the Dubovitsa Basic School. It offered an unusual infusion drink, bagels, and doughnuts made according to authentic recipes. Those wishing to taste these delicacies lined up in a queue.

Throughout the day guests of the festival had access to market stalls, interactive areas, master classes, photo zones, a children’s amusement park, and other amusements.

“The atmosphere here is incredible. There are so many interesting things, bright smiles, and happy faces. It was nice to receive a gift right at the entrance to the park: a bracelet made of linen threads. I’d like to make something myself, so I’m looking around to see what interesting things the artisan’s town has to offer,” said Irina, a guest from Gomel.
By the way, there are more than fifty craftsmen and artisans at the festive venues.

The festival has become a brand for the entire district. No folk festival is complete without an artistic component. A concert by music bands from Belarus and Russia represented a musical gift. A fire show will be a beautiful finale to the flax celebration.

The festival has been organized by the Korma District Executive Committee. The festival is supposed to develop the tourist potential of the district, promote spiritual values and traditions of folk culture, and raise the prestige of flax growers’ work.
