Possibility of importing oil to Belarus via Latvian ports confirmed

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – It is indeed possible to deliver oil to Belarus via Latvian ports. Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins made the relevant statement after meeting with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

The prime minister said: “As for economic relations, transportation and logistics where we already have relations represent the most logical way [for advancing the relations].”

In his words, the Latvian side sees a lot of room for advancing cooperation. “On the one hand, it is possible to export oil products from Belarus via Latvian ports. We could also discuss another possibility – oil import from all over the world to Belarus via Latvia. We are already discussing such possibilities. Certainly, companies should look into the matter because business needs to be mutually profitable. We can see great opportunities for Latvia and Belarus in this regard,” Krisjanis Karins said.

Asked to clarify when such agreements can be reached, the Latvian prime minister said: “You should ask companies that. As for the government, it is highly interested in getting business opportunities explored. It is a practical matter. It is necessary to talk to terminals and railway companies that will handle these deliveries.”

“As for Latvia's stance, we are interested in longer term relations. In that case one can plan business and it allows reducing prices, which is good for all the parties involved,” Krisjanis Karins added.
