Minsk attracts over $30bn in foreign investment in 2016-2020

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – In the last five years Minsk achieved noticeable improvements in the welfare of its citizens and also in the investment climate, Minsk Mayor Vladimir Kukharev said at the regional meeting of delegates of the 6th Belarusian People's Congress representing the city of Minsk, BelTA has learned.

"In the last five years Minsk's exports of goods and services rose 1.7 times, salaries - 1.4 times, incomes of the population and pensions - 1.2 times. More than 3 million sq m of housing were commissioned. The retail trade target were met. We have ensured stability in the labor market,” Vladimir Kukharev said. “More than 130,000 people were placed into newly created jobs. The average availability of jobs is 22 vacancies per registered unemployed person."

The city has created comfortable conditions for living and learning, sport and business, investment projects, social and cultural programs.

“Thanks to the ongoing work to improve the investment climate, Minsk organizations attracted more than $30 billion in foreign investment over the past five years. Minsk placed tenth in a prestigious international ranking in the category of the European city of the future of 2016-2017 that takes into account the strategy to attract foreign direct investments,” Vladimir Kukharev added. “The city has implemented big investment projects, for example, the shopping and entertainment center Galleria Minsk, the Mayak Minska residential complex, and other facilities investment, which also attests to the city investment attractiveness,” he added.

Although 2020 was a difficult year, Minsk retained its positions, outranking Kiev and Moscow in the quality of life index, Vladimir Kukharev added.

Taking part in the meeting were also Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova, Belarus president's aide in Minsk Aleksandr Barsukov, heads of ministries, MPs, representatives of executive authorities, public associations, and Minsk-based companies.

The 6th Belarusian People's Congress will take place in Minsk on 11-12 February 2021. The main provisions of Belarus' social and economic development program for 2021-2025, as well as the trends of the country's social and political development will be discussed by the participants of the Congress. The total number of the participants and invitees will be 2,700 people. Minsk will be represented by 366 delegates, including 55 members of the local council of deputies.
