Minister provides update on plans for new BelNPP unit

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – Belarusian Energy Minister Denis Moroz discussed the progress of preparations for the construction of the third power unit at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) during an interview to First News TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“In accordance with the instruction from the head of state, we have begun working out the issue of developing nuclear energy in Belarus in the form of a third unit at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. To proceed with the implementation of this project, we need to prepare a package of documents. We are starting the development of a specific framework agreement with the state corporation Rosatom, which will outline the technical and economic conditions for the implementation of this project,” said Denis Moroz.

The minister indicated that a working group at the level of the Energy Ministry and the Rosatom state corporation has been formed to prepare this framework agreement. “This working group has already held several meetings, and detailed discussions are underway. The short-term task is to prepare the framework agreement, as well as to prepare and submit to the government a detailed plan that will include a program of action for all state administration bodies regarding the construction of a nuclear facility in the country in the form of a third unit at BelNPP. Regarding the tasks for 2026, our objective is to finalize the framework agreement, prepare for the signing of a contract, and conclude an intergovernmental agreement between the Republic of Belarus and the technology supplier country, the Russian Federation, on the construction of the facility,” he said.
