MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – A support mission from the Moscow center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO MC) is working at the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the nuclear power plant’s representatives told BelTA.
The mission is focused on corporate oversight and monitoring. The purpose of the mission is to share the best practices in organizing the operation of independent oversight and in maintaining a high level of safety.
Till 2 September 2025 the experts are going to study the experience of organization of independent internal oversight over safety enforcement at the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant with two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW has been built according to the Russian design AES-2006. It is an evolutionary nuclear power plant design with third-generation water-moderated reactors with enhanced safety. They boast improved technical and economic parameters. A unique combination of active and passive safeguards is their key peculiarity. The reactor’s building is covered by a dual protective shell. The reactor will not be damaged by an earthquake, a hurricane, flooding, an explosion, and even a falling aircraft.
The first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant began commercial operation in June 2021, the second one in November 2023.
