Electricity usage at eight-year high in Belarus in January

MINSK, 19 January (BelTA) – Electricity consumption in Belarus in January was at its highest in the last eight years, the Belarusian energy company Belenergo told BelTA.

Electricity consumption was at its highest in the last eight years on 18 January 2021 when the average daily air temperature stood at 18.6C below zero. It is one of the highest electricity consumption peaks in the last 22 years. Higher figures were registered only in 2006, 2012, and 2013. Frosty weather is one of the reasons behind high electricity usage, Belenergo said.

According to the source, the Belarusian power grid operated steadily at the peak of electricity consumption and supplied consumers with heat and electric energy without interruptions.

On the same day some electricity was transferred to Ukraine upon Ukrenergo's request. The transfer was meant to ensure the stable operation of the Ukrainian power grid in unfavorable weather conditions.
